BMW is a huge manufacturer of bikes under the brand of BMW Motorrad. They have been producing motorbikes since 1923, their first bike was the R32. In May 2011 the 2,000,000th motorbike was created which was an R1200GS.

BMW Motorcycle History

Like most brands, BMWs history is full of ups and downs. They were successful during World War 2 as they produced the R75 with a sidecar. This was a capable off-road machine with its lockable differential, which made it ideal for the job.

In the early 80s, the BMW brought out the K Series, which was shaft driven and water cooled. After this, they started making the chain driven F and G series with single and parallel twin engines. In the 90s they updated the airhead Boxer engine, which then became known as the oilhead. By 2002 the oilhead had two spark plugs per cylinder. In 2004 BMW introduced the K1200S Sports Bike which came from the work with Williams F1 team. With an engine producing 167hp. It was the first time in years that BMW had shown willingness to compete in the market with other manufacturers.

BMW suffered a slight drop in sales in 2009 making €1,069 million on 87306 motorcycles. Compared to 2008 when the figures stood at €1,230 million selling 101685 bikes.

When 2011 came BMW inducted two great bikes, wanting to push sales back up - K1600GT and K1600GTL. The former intending to cover the sports-tourer range and the latter a luxury tourer.

Production constantly developing, BMW launched the completely new R1200RT with 125 HP at 7,750 rpm in 2014, which was a massive success. 2015 then bought the R1200RT keyless ignition and the "San Marino blue" colour.

BMW Motorrad has continued to expand and grow over time. By Sept 2015 they achieved record sales for the ninth time in a row with 11,088 units delivered. BMW seems to be set for another great year in 2016, with sale figures for the BMW R1200RS looking positive already.
