How To Care For & Maintain Your Electric Motorcycle
In the not-too-distant future, electric motorcycles will be the main market for motorbikes. Over the last few years, the automotive industry has seen a steep increase in the purchase of electric vehicles. According to the IDTechEx, in 2020 electric motorbikes sales went up by 50% in Europe.
Every motorbike is different. When buying a new bike, there will more than likely be some mechanical elements that will be different from the rest. However, when buying an electric motorbike, it can be a bit of a grey area for new people. Today, we’re getting down to the basics – we’re going to list all the things to consider when caring for and maintaining your electric motorcycle.
Cleaning your new Electric Motorbike
The most important thing when it comes down to electric bikes is cleanliness. We’re all proud of our bikes, and we like to make them look ‘spic and span’. However, keeping an electric motorcycle clean is probably more important than a fueled bike! Having specs of dust in your electric bike's compartments could tamper with the performance, or even stop the bike altogether. It’s not only dust that will build up. Grease and water can create a paste. If left long enough, this can reduce the bikes efficiency, which defeats the whole object!
Taking the time to wash your bike is key, but it must be done carefully. Here are some items you will need:
- Bucket
- Low Pressure Hose
- Soft Brush
- Cleaning Cloth for buffing
- Mild Cleaning Products
- Low Pressure Vacuum to clean charging ports.
- Always keep your drivetrain clean.
Here are some don’ts when cleaning your bike:
- Don’t use a power jet wash
- Don’t rush to wash your bike! Make sure all electric compartments are thoroughly sealed before releasing any water to it.
- Don’t wash whilst charging
- Don’t directly wash brake discs – use your cleaning cloth and some brake cleaning fluid.
Mechanical Maintenance on Electric Motorcycles
Some would argue that an electrical bike is pretty much the same as a normal bike. The reality is, it’s less hassle than your average fueled bike. An electric motorcycle eliminates many responsibilities when it comes to the maintenance of a motorbike; such as:
- Oil & Oil Filter Changes
- Coolant
- Spark Plugs
- Clutch
- Air Filters
- Timing Belts
- Gearbox
Here are some things that you must either maintain yourself, or keep your garage up to date with:
- Tyres
- Chain Cleaning and Lubrication
- Brakes/Brake Fluid
- Lights
- Battery
- Hydraulic Fluid
It’s important to note that you might not be able to access certain parts. If you have an issue with a specific part and you are struggling to get to it, it might be worth dropping a quick call to your manufacturer first.
Keep your bike up to date! Your bike might come with an app, make sure to keep this up to date too.
Reasons why YOU should get an electric motorbike
- Stay ahead of the game – electric vehicles in general are the future
- It is more cost effective!
- Less hassle – look at the maintenance… need we say more?!
- Great for the planet! This is why companies are urging people to turn electric.
