Aprilia is an Italian motorcycle company, which is now owned by Piaggio. The company started as a bicycle manufacturer and then moved to scooters and motorcycles. It was founded by Cavaliere Alberto Beggio after the Second World War, the first factory was based in Noale, Italy.
The History of Aprilia Motorbikes
In 1968 Cavaliere’s son took control of the company and created the first 50cc motorcycle involving a few collaborators. The first Aprilia mopeds were then constructed and named Colibri, Daniela and Packi.
Over the next few years Aprilia started winning championships and branching out into new areas of biking. Ivan Alborghetti won the Italian 125 and 250 cc motocross championships in 1977 on Aprilia’s, and closed the season in 78 with two thirds places in individual races and in the World Championship he came sixth. Aprilia then added enduro, trails and road bikes giving between 50 and 600 cc in the 80s. This opened up their target audience massively and they brand were now becoming well known.
In the mid 80s Aprilia launched the 124 STX, 350 STX, AF1 and the Tuareg. Aprilia was also getting involved in championships:
♦ Philippe Berlatier competed in the trails world championship coming fifth place
♦ Loris Reggiani came sixth in the road racing World Championship on a Aprilia GP 250
♦ In 1987 at San Marino Grand Prix in Misano Loris Reggiani's AF1 won the first World Speed Championship
The 90s held a few championship wins for Aprilia. In 1992 Alessandro Gramigni won the World 125 Road Racing Championship title and the next year Tommy Ahvala won the World Trails Championship on an Aprilia Climber. After these victories, Aprilia went on to win 15 Road Racing World Championships, 16 European Speed Titles and the 250 cc class Grand Prix 124 times. Also in the 90s Aprilia started in the scooter market with Italy’s first all plastic bike, the Amico. A few years later Aprilia launched a larger diameter wheel scooter with the name of Scarabeo, with a four stroke, four value engine. In 1999 Aprilia entered World Superbike Championship racing with the RSV Mille.
In the early 2000s the company launched the RSV Tuono, which was pretty much the RSV Mille with motocross handlebars and a small head light fairing. Aprilia was then acquired by Piaggio & C, forming the worlds fourth biggest bike group with 1.5 billion Euros in sales. Aprilia has now become one of the most successful motorcycle racing brands of all times, with a record of 276th victory.
