The History of Honda Motorcycles

1960 Honda broke out of the Japanese marketing working with Grey Advertising, they created the slogan ‘You meet the nicest people on a Honda’. In contrast to other brands at the time, Harley’s for example who were associated with rebels, Honda’s campaign suggested they were an everyman’s bike. This was hugely successful, the ad was running for 3 years and by the end of 1962, they had sold 90,000 motorcycles.

Honda took the motorcycle world by storm, so much so that in 1975 the Boston Consulting Group were commissioned by the UK government to produce a report on how Honda was out-competing the British manufactures. They found that Honda had a high scale of quality products and that British managers had actually failed to invest enough in their business. Another report run by Richard Pascale in 1984 suggested that Honda’s success was not actually down to a master strategic plan, but the extremely hard work of the employees.

Honda only grew with the introduction of the Honda Racing Corporation in 1982. Hondas race bikes were seen as ‘sleek & stylish’, and won their first 500cc Grand Prix Championship with Freddie Spencer. In Motocross World Championship Honda claimed six world championships and in World Enduro, they captured eight titles.
