A Brief History of Essex

The history books for Essex date back to the Anglo-Saxon Period – or, 527 AD to be specific. There isn’t much evidence to show that in the county but if you’re up for a visit to the chapel of St. Peter-on-the-Wall, you’d be coming pretty close! – This place dates back to 660AD.

Statistically by the map, Essex covers an area of 1,420 square miles – and with a population of over 1.7 million residents, we’d say it’s pretty big! It has towns such as Stanstead Mountfitchet, Saffron Walden, Halstead, Braintree, Manningtree, Harwich, Walton-on-the-Naze, Clacton-on-Sea, Maldon, Burham-on-Crouch, Rayleigh, Rochford, Basildon, Harlow, and Brentwood under its wing. However, Essex is home to the oldest town in the UK – Colchester; home to Roman ruins, a Norman Castle, and the oldest wooden church in the world, Greenstead Church.

Biker-Friendly Accommodation

Full English breakfast is included in the price of your stay, and there is also secure parking for motorcycles!

Osea Leisure Park

Be at one with nature at this lovely multi-award-winning campsite situated in Heybridge. The acres of land often get visited by many creatures; they’re all relatively small so you don’t have to worry about waking up next to any cows. Whilst staying at Osea Leisure Park you get the option of glamping or camping, and if you don’t feel like cooking, there is a restaurant and bar on site! New for 2019, the guys at Osea Leisure Park have installed new and improved Bathroom facilities with added discreet lighting for the darker times. In December, they also introduced a games room to the mix, with various arcade favourites!

The White Hart Hotel

Owned by the Green E King Group, The White Hart Hotel at Braintree is a piece of history in itself. Back in the days of the 14th Century, this building served as a Coaching Inn for many years up until 1848’s introduction to the railway. Upon visiting this hotel you will soon see evidence of the history in the timbre framework of the inn. The White Hart offers the choice of 34 cosy bedrooms to choose from, each offering a home-from-home style stay. There is also ample parking on site that is free for guests.

Biker Friendly Cafe’s & Hangouts

Revved Up!

Fancy treating yourself to some new gear and a brew? Look no further! Situated right on the seafront, this is a great place to visit on a nice summer’s day. Take a ride out to the coast of Essex, pop in and have a good old chat with some fellow bikers.

The Original Tea Hut

If you take a ride out to Loughton in Epping Forest, specifically on Fairmead Road, you will come across the Original Tea Hut! You will know when you’re there because it is also known as ‘The Bikers Hut’, so there’ll probably be a lot of bikes outside. Back in the 1930s, there used to be Speedway Racing nearby, so the hut was set up to provide refreshments to the visiting spectators. This hut is still here 80 years later, offering lots of hot and cold drink selections, as well as a variety of snacks!

Great Bentley Motorcycle Meet

Every Wednesday the Great Bentley Cricket Club get a huge visit by a load of bikes! We aren’t sure if they’re bikers themselves but it seems they don’t mind because bikers have been meeting there for years!

The Cabin Dairy

Owners Kelvin and Becca offer a warm and friendly welcome to all bikers! Last year they hosted their first bike night and it proved a huge success. Kelvin and Becca often get visited by the Dengie and South Essex Bikers who often host events from the Cabin Dairy. During the Christmas period, they hosted a Christmas Toy Run. Stay tuned on their Facebook page for future up and coming events. They are generally open throughout the week, offering delicious cakes and savoury dishes, accompanied by some light refreshments and lovely brews!

Clubs

Colchester Classic Motorcycle Club

This club has been going strong for over 20 years. The members enjoy meeting up every 3rd Monday of each month at the Live and Let Live pub. There are often regular ride outs held throughout the year to various events and museums. All members own a whole range of bikes from new and old.

Dengie 100 Motorcycle Club

This friendly bunch enjoy meeting up at the Huntsman & Hounds pub in Althorne every 2nd and 4th Thursday. They also love exploring and going abroad together. If they’re not going across the pond, they like meeting up on a Sunday and at some point during the week for regular ride outs, as well as Saturday breakfast runs! There is also a ladies section of the group – they meet for regular rides during the week too!

Silver Knights Club

For over 35 years South-East-Essex-based ‘the Silver Knights Bike Club’ have grown their club from just 3 people to over 2 dozen! Like many clubs, they enjoy visiting various events and teaming up with like-minded individuals, often starting up their engines together at least once a month. They also enjoy visiting different countries too. Over the years they have developed a club with ages ranging from 20 – 60. Since the club has been going since the early eighties, there have been a few new youngsters welcomed to the club too. This had the club talking – and so, they created a juniors sub-club, catered to under-18’s!

Events

Bum in the Mud Rally

This year (2019), the Muddy Bum Rally is a special one – they’re celebrating their 15th birthday! What you can expect at Bum in the Mud Rally is a lot of fun! Spread out over 3 days in April; why not consider finding yourself a camping spot at this exciting event?! There’ll be lots of bands and 2 DJ’s on, as well as various stalls, and a bar/canteen on site too!

Essex Air Ambulance Motorcycle Run

For the past 20 years, a group of bikers have started their engines in Dunton, taking a 60-ish mile ride up to Harwich – all in aid of the Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance! Last year they welcomed over 3000 riders to the run, with thousands of spectators to join them! At the end of the run, riders will join their families and others at a family-fun day over in Harwich! There’ll be lots of stalls, live music, and a kids zone all situated by the lovely Harwich Seaside.

Car & Bike Autojumble

Here’s one for the overall engine enthusiasts! On the 17th February 2019, Navestock Village Hall will be home to the Car & Bike Autojumble, featuring various classic vehicles. There will be various pitches and stalls all over the premises. Hot food will also be available along with free parking.

Fun (and useless) Facts About Essex!

  • It has at least 21 islands! I’m not listing them all, but you can view them here.
  • Turning back time to over 600 years ago, Chelmsford was actually capital of England! Albeit, it was only for a few days, but nevertheless – we think it’s pretty interesting.
  • The oldest town in Britain is Colchester.
  • Picture this: Braintree, 1701. A gentleman named Richard Bradley was the proud owner of Britain’s first crocodile... each to their own!
  • You probably already knew this one, but over the past decade or so, Essex has become somewhat of a tourist spot, due to the popular TV show – The Only Way is Essex!
