What is a learner legal rider?!
There are different stages of learner legal that coordinate around your age. A 16-year-old who holds a provisional license and have done their CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) can ride a lightweight machine. A solo machine with strictly no more power than 50cc. The vehicle must be limited to a top speed of 28 mph, meaning you may need to purchase a restrictor.
When on the roads with this machine, you must also be:
✓ Displaying L plates clearly
✓ Have a speedo measuring in miles per hour
✓ Vehicle insured
✓ Vehicle taxed
When reaching 17 years old, you can step it up a bit! You can now move to a motorcycle if you wish, with a power output of 125cc. The points above still would apply, so L plates are still needed and so on.
Still slightly unsure what stage you’re at and what category you fit into?
Hopefully, this graph will help you pinpoint where you are in terms of licence category and what you can ride:
|What can I ride?||Requirements for licence|
|Mopeds with speed range of 25 km/h to 45 km/h||Compulsory basic training (CBT), theory test, practical test on all powered 2-wheeled moped|
|Small 3-wheelers (up to 50 CC and below 4 kW)||CBT, theory test, practical test|
|Light quadricycles (weighing under 350 kg, top speed 45 km/h)||CBT, theory test, practical test|
|Light motorcycle up to 11 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio not more than 0.1 kW per kg) and 125 cc||CBT, theory test, practical test|
|Motor tricycles with a power output not more than 15 kW||CBT, theory test, practical test|
|Standard motorcycle up to 35 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio not more than 0.2 kW per kg), the bike mustn’t be derived from a vehicle more than twice its power||Direct access route – theory and practical|
Progressive access route – 2 years experience on A1 motorbike and a further practical test
|restricted motorcycles in size/power, with or without a sidecar, and motor tricycles with power output over 15 kW||Direct access route – CBT theory and practical (you must be at least 24)|
Progressive access route – held an A2 licence for a minimum of 2 years – practical test (21 or over)
24 (direct) or 21 (progressive access)
