Harley Davidsons History

We researched this in detail in a recent blog post, the main thing that became clear is Harley has an amazing ability to stay with the times. They firstly changed their manufacturing strategy in 1981 under the instruction of 13 investors, led by Vaughn Beals and Willie Davidson. When the Japanese came to the market they showed the industry how to produce bikes quickly, methodically and to a high quality. Harley analysed this and applied the Just In Time method of production to their factories, cutting down flaws and value issues. This meant between 1985 and 1987 Harley:

Reduced inventory by 75%

Increased productivity by 50%

Scrap and rework went down by 68%

They continued to expand and grow in the 80’s & 90’s introducing their legendary model families like FLT, Road King and the Softail. In 2003 in-revenue has increased at an annual rate of 17%. Profits were up at an annual rate of 36%.

They then begin to market to very different demographics, compared to the usual large hairy male stereotype! Harley started creating lighter bikes which appealed to people that aren’t quite as physically strong. Making them more accessible to women and young adults. They marketed this perfectly on social media sites and had high level ‘influencers’ doing half the job for them! Selling the lifestyle and the cool factor through these free services, this was a great marketing move.
